Improving energy efficiency and indoor comfort through digital solutions

We strive to increase our market share of electric roof windows and believe we can leverage digital technology to strengthen our offering and create more value for our customers. With roof windows that can be operated automatically with ‘VELUX ACTIVE’ or similar functionality, we ensure that more people will benefit from better living environments - emphasising natural light, fresh air and energy efficiency.

Control at your fingertips

To give you full control of your windows, we offer several digital solutions:

VELUX ACTIVE
This smart home solution links your electric windows and accessories, so blinds and shutters automatically protect rooms against excessive heat, and roof windows open automatically to ensure healthy indoor air quality.
VELUX APP CONTROL
With this app, you can control all electric and solar-powered VELUX products directly from your phone or other devices.
VELUX Touch
This lets you control multiple VELUX products from one master touchpad.

Why indoor climate matters

An analysis by RAND Europe, published in the VELUX Healthy Homes Barometer 2022, showed that one out of three Europeans live in unhealthy buildings, i.e. buildings that are damp, overheated, have a lack of daylight, or inadequate heating. The analysis also shows that alongside temperature and air quality, daylight has been shown to positively impact the working environment and even improve performance in line with the amount of daylight. What’s more, it also creates a more pleasant and enjoyable working environment, which has been shown to considerably reduce absenteeism.

1 out of 3
1/3 of Europeans are exposed to an indoor climate hazard.
15% reduction
Better access to daylight can reduce absenteeism in the workplace by 15%.

To make it easy to maintain optimal indoor climate conditions, we offer smart sensors for our roof windows that monitor temperature, CO2, humidity and light in rooms. With these sensors and the VELUX ACTIVE solution installed, rooms are automatically ventilated whenever needed.

Smart Green Indoor Climate Manager

VELUX and other partners are currently working on a project to investigate indoor climate and energy efficiency in homes using smart technology. The Smart Green Indoor Climate Manager is an explorative proof of concept that uses weather data, sensors and artificial intelligence and links heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units to VELUX windows and accessories.

The Danish Technological Institute has estimated that this type of integrated system can save up to 25% of the total energy consumption of a standard European family house.

By using sensors and linking devices in the home, the Smart Green Indoor Climate Manager can optimise indoor climate by minimising issues such as overheating. For example, on hot days, windows open in the morning to air out and shutters can close during the day to block out excessive heat.

The system combines artificial intelligence and data from multiple sources, including user inputs via the app. During 2024, the system will be tested in three single-family homes across Denmark to evaluate its performance and effectiveness. Data from these tests will boost knowledge that can be used in our product development.

Wind or solar

VELUX automatically operated roof windows can be powered either by mains electricity or solar power. It is simple to upgrade all manual roof windows to make them electric or solar.

Zero-plastic packaging
Plastic-free packaging

By 2030, we aim to remove all plastic from our packaging and make it 100% recyclable.

Throughout the VELUX Group, we are transitioning to single-material, recyclable, plastic-free packaging. This new packaging is designed to deliver high levels of protection and can be disposed of in one waste stream for recycling.
